I couldn’t have said it better myself, Rip! For those of you who don’t know who Rip Esselstyn is he is the author of The Engine 2 Diet, a firefighter from Austin, TX who helped switch his department to vegan which is so hard to do I suppose. He is a strong athelete (run completely on a vegan diet) and the son of the famous Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn who is internationally know for his work on reversing heart disease (even in the most advanced stages) with a plant-based diet!

Helping sinus issues the natural way

My sinuses, just like my toddler, have been “acting up” recently. And I suspect I’m not the only one in the U.S. that has this horrible issue. This is one of the ways we keep big pharma in business. I feel that as I’m aging the worse they are getting and prior to living in North Carolina, a very beautiful state however filled with pine trees that spew their yellow tree love all over everything during the spring, I had never had allergy problems. Although I have never been tested I feel that I’m allergic to mold spores. This was made apparent this past late Summer/early Fall when we were blessed with lots of rain and with that came humidity; a heaven for mold. I don’t care to take medication for my allergies usually I just ride it out and maybe take some headache medicine if it gets too bad. What I do like to do and what I’ve found to help consistently help to clear sinuses is plant essential oils (more on that in a bit). Within your skull lies a sinus cavity that runs from one ear, above your nose and under your eyes, to the other ear. When it stays nice and moist with a healthy amount of mucus, bacteria will have a harder time of growing and on the other hand if your sinus cavity is extremely dry bacteria will find themselves at home causing inflammation, discomfort, and pressure and if left untreated: infection a.k.a sinusitis. If it comes to infection and using aromatherapy doesn’t help alleviate the cause within 3 days, I would have to recommend antibiotics. But ONLY if everything else you have tried is a no go.
I will now give my recommendations on how to help clear up sinuses and even avoid a problem in the first place.
1.) Essential oils – these are 100% natural volatile plant extracts that have been shown for many centuries to help heal. For sinus-related problems stick to oils from trees such as Cypress, Pine, Cedar wood, and my personal favorite Eucalyptus. Add 2 drops to a bowl of boiling water. Add after the water has been added to bowl or you risk of evaporation before you even begin. Place your face over the bowl and a towel over your face. Breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes. Do this three times a day for 3 days. It is very important to remember that aromatherapy is not an immediate answer with immediate relief. It’s not popping a pill and finding that temporary relief in a few minutes. If you want to use this way of treatment it is very important to have patience.
2.) Water, water, water and lots of it. Drink it all day long. Remember keeping our sinus cavity moist? Water is the key. Keep yourself hydrated; this is number one.
3.) If too much mucus is the problem avoid dairy and soy as these are two of the most common mucus-causers.
4.) If you’re the adventurous type seek out the Netti-pot. Using saline solution (salt and water) in the pot and pouring through one nostril while letting it release out of the other one, it really helps to clear out those sinuses and relieve pressure. Please read the directions because if you do not do it right you can help cause infection by allowing the liquid to enter the ears. This may take a bit of practice but when you’ve got it you will never leave home without one.
5.) And if you’re not the adventurous type or the Netti-pot seems a little well, gross then use a saline mist that you can spray up the nose and help keep the nostrils and sinus cavity nice and moist.
6.) Oregano and garlic essential oils have potent anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. The herbs Echinacea, goldenseal, and of course Vitamin C are always great substances to use in addition to one or more of the suggested treatments above.

Reverse diabetes with diet and not drugs

I often wonder when I see a plate of brown or white things, which is often, how the human body assimilates the stuff. As I stand in line at an all-you-can eat buffet awaiting my turn I think how it must have been way back, long before lines like these exisited. When the world was full of colorful food instead of beige, what humans ate, how they ate it and so on. I picture a family gathered around a fire ready for their dinner. A basket filled with bright green leaves, purple berries, maybe some meat if the father was still alive after a hunt. Whether readily accessible or not it was always local, fresh, and organic. As a matter of fact those kinds of things were not thought of and didn’t even exist. It was a no-brainer. What also didn’t exist was beige and white foods besides, perhaps the potato. Through-out the many centuries of refinement and upgrades humans have worked extremely hard so that the end result was to not have to. We have convenience, variety, and a plethora of tastes from all over the world; a truly luxurious lifestyle and how very fortunate we are to be able to experience this end result. We also have now a plethora of chronic diseases which, as we are quickly finding are due to primarily lifestyle choices. With convenience comes the beige, the white, the processed, the microwaved and so forth. Convenience has truly come with a devastating price: an early grave. The surgeon general has recently stated that this new generation may be the first to not live as long as their parents. This sounds to me more horrific then the most horrific war-story. This statement sounds more scary than the thought of another terrorist attack, natural disaster, or genocide. In fact this very may well be genocide. That’s what it sounds like…to me. More and more children are developing Type II or “adult on-set” diabetes than ever before. This very debilitating disease does not need to exist! Diabetes is caused due to insulin resistance in the body. Sugar is transported in the body by a hormone called insulin produced by the pancreas. Insulin is there to help regulate blood sugar levels. We need insulin and I can only imagine back in the cave man era it was brought out to fight very rarely. When it is continously being used it becomes exhausted and no longer works as it should. The result is a high blood sugar level accompanied by symptoms of beign overweight, fatigued, cold and shaky after eating. Food should nourish and provide energy to the body not deplete the body of resources and make one feel tired. It’s not here to make one obese. It’s not here to make one want to take a nap after lunch. Food is not the enemy; we are. What we are feeding ourselves and our children is nothing short of shameful. I understand we are fighting a losing battle against corporations that although don’t want to kill their customers, they do want them addicted and coming back for more. So adding addicting substances such as sugar, white processed flours which is assimilated in the body as sugar, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) a chemically-altered and shelf-life extending form of sugar, salt, and fat will keep them coming back for more and away from the competition. They may not want to kill their customers, well, neither does the drug dealer.
It has been shown time and time again in recent years that heart disease and diabetes can be reversed through diet. Patients have been coming off of their medications just by eating vegetables. It is simply amazing yet understandable. Are we suprised? Yes and no. It is not surprising that what you put into your body causes dis-ease. Think of a plant or a car or a goldfish. Now why can’t we apply the same thought-process to ourselves and better yet our children. Heart disease begins in childhood. As parents we are completely responsible for what our children eat and yes I feel the parents of obese children should be charged with child neglect and/or abuse. They will eat what we give them, they have no choice. They will eat what tastes good to them. I have three children; I know they like chicken nuggets and french fries. But I prepare squash with orzo instead and if they refuse to eat it they will go hungry; they won’t die, they’ll just be hungry. In time they learn they need to eat what is given to them if they don’t want to be hungry later.
If you currently have been diagnosed with diabetes or are pre-diabetic (I’m assuming we all are), look at what you are eating. Is your plate beige and white or is it a rainbow of colors? Try eliminating dairy, meat, and processed foods and increase fruits, veggies, whole grains, and legumes. Visit sites that have lots of inspiration and recipes to get fresh ideas. Join forums for support; there are others just like you. Actually too many others. On your next doctor visit see what happens. If your numbers drop or better yet you can begin decreasing your medication then treat yourself to the spa and continue to stay on track.

Pink salt

Himalayan Pink Sea Salt

If you haven’t yet heard of Himalayan pink sea salt than you’re not alone. Although it is fairly unheard of it is easily accessable; I see it at major grocery store chains where, well the salt is. The reason why we love this stuff is not only the flavor (a bit more strong yet not chemically tasting), but for the fact it contains all 84 trace minerals! It is also not processed by bleaching or some other unnatural and unsafe means (the high heat alone causes restructuring of the salt’s chemical structure). It’s pH closely resembles that of human blood therefore it helps promote pH regulation of all body cells. It’s also been known to: help regulate normal blood sugar
help food particles assimilate during digestion, promotes vascular health, helps libido, and supports respiratory and sinus health.
I’d say that’s more than enough reasons to make the switch and ditch the highly-processed, nutrient-less, and chemically-laden table salt in those cow salt shakers on your table. Besides it’s pretty.

Bagel day

So, today is Friday and what that means around the office is bagels and doughnuts for breakfast. While I used to anticipate Friday mornings so I can indulge in this very sweet ritual, now I dread it. How can I break this horrid routine as I listen to the others laughing and chatting over there breakfast as I smell the toaster giving off delicious aromas of cheese from the asiago and garlic from the everything bagels? Education of course! I know that bagels, although one of my most favorite and most missed foods of all time, are actually nothing more than round, white, void, processed, glutenous, insulin-promoting, and fat-producing little demons. I’m originally from the north and bagels are well, one of the basic food groups up there. That doesn’t make it ok to eat one it just makes it harder to break the habit. Especially now that bagels are 3X the size they were originally and are everywhere with just about everything to smear on or stuff into.
Bagels are made up of primarily white processed and refined flour. When wheat is refined it has been stripped of everything that was ever good and then some of the vitamins are put back or “enriched”. Be wary of that word. When flour is processed the body just doesn’t recognize it and processes it as a foreign object wreaking havoc on your body systems. When flour is processed it has absolutely no taste and therefore high fructose corn syrup comes to the rescue. Wheat is a carbohydrate which is the main fuel-producing substance in the body. However, when too much fuel is generated in the body the rest is stored as fat. Also carbs are sugar and sugar needs a hormone called insulin which carries it throughout the body. As more sugar enters the body more insulin is needed by the pancreas to carry this sugar away to cells. After time and lots of sugar insulin becomes resistant to this sugar almost like it’s “exhausted” and becomes less effective at carrying sugar away and helping your blood sugar levels to normalize. This insulin-resistance leads to one of the most chronic, destructive, and deadly diseases known to man and one of the most prevalent today: diabetes.
It is my opinion to stay away from the little demons called bagels and most of the nutrient-void “foods” filled with carbs such as all white bread, pastries, wraps, etc., and stick to stone-ground, whole-wheat breads. Better yet living breads such as Ezekiel. Learn how to make your own breads using funky different flours such as chickpea, kamut, and buckwheat.
